As the world continues to awaken to the silent epidemic of loneliness, campaigns like Cancel Loneliness have never been more vital. In 2025, the Loneliness Awareness Week offers a national platform to shine a spotlight on one of the most pressing social challenges of our time. For Band of Brothers Qld Inc., it marks the perfect moment to launch the second phase of its Cancel Loneliness initiative: a bold, community-led activation designed to bring connection, conversation, and care to the people who need it most.
The Rising Importance of Loneliness Awareness
Loneliness is not just a fleeting emotion, it’s a chronic condition affecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. Research has long linked sustained loneliness to serious mental and physical health risks, including depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, and even early mortality. In Australia, it’s estimated that one in three people regularly experience loneliness, and post-pandemic data continues to highlight just how widespread – and hidden – this issue has become.
Loneliness Awareness Week, first established in the UK by the Marmalade Trust in 2017, was created to challenge the stigma around loneliness and promote authentic connection. Since then, the awareness week has become an international movement, inspiring grassroots campaigns and government attention alike. In Australia, the week provides a unique annual opportunity for organisations, councils, and individuals to address loneliness in meaningful, creative, and community-focused ways.
Cancel Loneliness: A Campaign Rooted in Connection
It is within this broader context that Band of Brothers Qld Inc. proudly launches the next chapter of Cancel Loneliness, a community-driven initiative that speaks directly to the goals of 2025 Loneliness Awareness Week.
This second phase, known as the Community Activation Phase, empowers individuals, businesses, and community groups to take simple yet powerful steps to reduce loneliness together. At its heart, the campaign is built around four core actions:
- Notice – recognising the signs of loneliness in others.
- Nudge – gently starting a conversation with care and respect.
- Name It – validating what someone might be feeling by giving loneliness a name.
- Notify – connecting them to safe, local support options like a weekly check-in call.
These Four Action Steps serve as both a call to action and a practical guide – helping everyday people become part of a growing movement to Cancel Loneliness one moment at a time.
A Community Response Led by Band of Brothers Qld Inc.
As the charity behind Cancel Loneliness, Band of Brothers Qld Inc. has spent years working quietly in the community to support people facing isolation, disconnection, and vulnerability. Their unique strength lies in mobilising friends, neighbours, and coworkers of lonely people to be the first line of care – and in helping local volunteers make a real, human difference through compassion and conversation.
Through initiatives like weekly phone check-ins and grassroots outreach to homeless women and others at risk, Band of Brothers has seen firsthand the power of simple connection. This insight forms the foundation of the Cancel Loneliness Advocate Program – a new stream of the campaign encouraging:
- Local businesses and organisations to become official Advocates, promoting connection and offering safe, welcoming spaces for conversation.
- Caring individuals to sign up as Community Connectors, acting as everyday champions who notice loneliness in others and gently support them toward reconnection.
These roles are not complicated or clinical – they’re about being human. Advocates and Connectors don’t need qualifications, just a willingness to listen, notice, and care.
Launching in Redcliffe: A Model for Australia
The Redcliffe Peninsula in Queensland is the proud home of the Cancel Loneliness pilot rollout, supported by the generous backing of the Coopers Foundation. Redcliffe was selected as a starting point due to its vibrant but diverse population, its high proportion of older residents, and strong community networks – making it an ideal location to trial the campaign.
This local activation is the second step in a larger, scalable vision to expand the Cancel Loneliness initiative across the entire City of Moreton Bay, and eventually into communities throughout Australia.
From suburban neighbourhoods to remote towns, the tools, resources, and training offered through Cancel Loneliness are designed to be flexible, culturally appropriate, and easy to implement at any scale.
More Than a Campaign – A Cultural Statement
The name Cancel Loneliness is deliberately provocative. In a culture where “cancel culture” is often associated with exclusion and public shaming, this campaign flips the script: it calls on people to cancel the silence, cancel the stigma, and cancel the invisibility that loneliness creates.
Instead of alienation, we offer compassion. Instead of judgment, we offer conversation. Instead of isolation, we offer a simple yet powerful human gift: presence.
It’s a message that resonates deeply with the goals of 2025 Loneliness Awareness Week – to make loneliness more visible, more talked about, and ultimately, less tolerated in our communities.
Join the Movement
The Cancel Loneliness campaign isn’t just for organisations – it’s for everyone. Whether you’re part of a business, a social group, or simply someone who wants to make a difference in your street, your workplace, or your family, there’s a role for you.
Because when we come together – even for a single conversation – we begin to change lives.
